Echten is a village in the Dutch province of Drenthe and is part of the De Wolden municipality. The havezate Huis te Echten is located in the village.
History
Echten is an esdorp which developed in the Middle Ages around {{ill|Huis te Echten|nl}}.{{cite book|url=https://www.dbnl.org/tekst/sten009monu07_01/sten009monu07_01_0028.php |title=Echten |author=Ronald Stenvert |page=105 |year=2001 |location=Zwolle |publisher=Waanders |isbn=90 400 9454 3 |language=nl |access-date=12 March 2022}} It was first mentioned in 1181 as "in villa Echtene".{{cite web|url=https://etymologiebank.nl/trefwoord/echten2 |title=Echten - (geografische naam) |website=Etymologiebank |access-date=12 March 2022 |language=nl}} Huis te Echten was a havezate owned by the {{ill|van Holthe tot Echten|nl}} family who were in possession of the area, and oversaw the excavation the peat. A havezate was a requirement to be admitted to the Knights of Drenthe.{{cite web|url=https://www.geheugenvandrenthe.nl/havezate |title=Havezate |website=Geheugen van Drenthe |access-date=12 March 2022 |language=nl}} The estate is surrounded by a double moat. It has been modified and restored many times during its history. The oldest parts of the estate are from the late 15th century. In 1840, Echten was home to 210 people.{{cite web|url=https://www.plaatsengids.nl/echten-drenthe |title=Echten (Drenthe) |website=Plaatsengids |access-date=12 March 2022 |language=nl}} In 1953, an air watchtower was constructed in the forest near Echten to spot enemy planes flying under the radar.
