The Joint Base Cape Cod is a state-designated joint base created by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and the United States War Department in 1935. Governor James Curley signed the state bill to allocate and purchase land for a military facility, and establishing a formal commission to manage this new state military property and personnel. After {{convert|22000|acre|ha km2 mi2|abbr=|lk=on}} of land was secured on Cape Cod, the Massachusetts National Guard began erecting tents and a basic training program in the following year.{{cite web |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20060705155805/https://www.mass.gov/guard/E%26RC/mmrhistory1.htm |url=http://www.mass.gov/guard/E&RC/mmrhistory1.htm |title=MMR History |publisher=Commonwealth of Massachusetts |archive-date=2006-07-05 |access-date=2017-11-27 |url-status=dead }} Formerly the Massachusetts Military Reservation, it was renamed in 2013 to Joint Base Cape Cod by Massachusetts; although having a name similar to many federal military installations, it has no federal recognition.{{cite news|last=Brennan|first=Georga|title=Massachusetts Military Reservation may get new name: Joint Base Cape Cod|url=http://www.capecodonline.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20130529/NEWS/305290334|access-date=2013-05-29 |newspaper=Cape Cod Times|date=2013-05-29 |url-status=dead|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20180726113044/http://www.capecodtimes.com/article//20130529/NEWS/305290334|archive-date=2018-07-26 }}{{cite news|last=Brennan|first=George|title=Goodbye, MMR.
