It was the 22nd Municipal corporation in Tamil Nadu, and was established on 15 March 2024. It is headed by the mayor, who presides over a deputy mayor, and is administrated by the City Commissioner. Karaikudi Urban Agglomeration area has adjoined with the surrounding areas of Sankarapuram, Kottaiyur, Kandanur, and Puduvayal town panchayats; and village panchayats that includes Koviloor, Ariyakudi, Amaravathiputhur, Iluppaikkudi and Managiri. The annual tax revenue of the corporation is expected to be about 57.25 crore rupees. History and administration

On 15 March 2024, Karaikudi Greater Municipality was upgraded to Municipal Corporation by Chief minister of TamilNadu M.K. It was the first corporation to be made in the Sivaganga District.
