Ōmiya Station opened on 16 March 1885{{cite book |script-title=ja: 日本国有鉄道停車場一覧 |trans-title=JNR Station Directory | publisher = Japanese National Railways | year = 1985 | location = Japan | page = 97| isbn = 4-533-00503-9}} as a station of Nippon Railway.

In 1894, a railway workshop was opened to the north of the station, and this facility is still operated by JR East and Japan Freight Railway Company.

Passenger statistics
