Booth, born and raised in Swansea, attended Bishop Gore School. He played for Cardiff, Swansea, and Neath over the course of his career, as well as some varsity rugby while earning his blue at Cambridge University.{{cite news |title=Coming in through the out door! |work=South Wales Evening Post |date=20 November 1993}}{{cite news |title=Booth and co blown apart |url=https://www.newspapers.com/image/809126228 |page=21 |work=Cambridge Evening News |date=26 February 1990}}
A scrum-half, Booth was notably on the bench for Wales on nine occasions, without ever gaining a cap. He sat on the bench for the entire 1991 Rugby World Cup, where starting scrum-half Robert Jones played every minute. This makes him the only Wales player to have been named on a World Cup squad but never capped (excluding replacement players).{{cite news |last1=Thomas |first1=Simon |title=The Welshman selected for a World Cup who ended his career uncapped |url=https://www.walesonline.co.uk/sport/rugby/rugby-news/strange-story-welshman-who-selected-16952022 |work=Wales Online |date=22 September 2019 |language=en}}
Booth is a financial consultant by profession. He is the brother-in-law of Wales international Stuart Davies, who married Booth's sister Lorna. Davies was Booth's captain during his time at Swansea.
