Arthroleptis is a genus of frogs in the family Arthroleptidae found in tropical sub-Saharan Africa. Their common names include screeching frogs, sometimes simply squeakers.{{cite web |url=http://research.amnh.org/vz/herpetology/amphibia/Amphibia/Anura/Arthroleptidae/Arthroleptinae/Arthroleptis |title=Arthroleptis Smith, 1849 |author=Frost, Darrel R. |year=2015 |work=Amphibian Species of the World: an Online Reference. Description
These species are terrestrial breeding, with direct development (metamorphosis to froglets occurs within the egg). Many species in this genus are small, or very small, frogs with a minimum adult size of {{convert|15|mm|abbr=on}} snout-vent length.{{cite web|url=http://www.amphibiaweb.org/lists/faminfo/Arthroleptidae_long.html |last1=Blackburn|first1=David C.|title=Family Arthroleptidae|website=AmphibiaWeb: Information on amphibian biology and conservation. [web application]. 2016. Berkeley, California|date=March 2011 |accessdate=10 January 2016}} The largest species (Arthroleptis nikeae and Arthroleptis tanneri) reach body lengths around {{convert|55|mm|abbr=on}}. It was hypothesized that small species evolved from larger ones, but in fact the opposite seems to be case.
Arthroleptis species are terrestrial leaf-litter frogs that feed on a range of terrestrial arthropods, such as ants and termites.{{cite journal|last1=Blackburn|first1=D. |year=2008 |title=Biogeography and evolution of body size and life history of African frogs: Phylogeny of squeakers (Arthroleptis) and long-fingered frogs (Cardioglossa) estimated from mitochondrial data |journal=Molecular Phylogenetics and Evolution |volume=49 |issue=3 |pages=806–826 |doi=10.1016/j.ympev.2008.08.015 |pmid=18804169|bibcode=2008MolPE..49..806B }}
