The Centre for Effective Altruism (CEA) is an Oxford-based organisation that builds and supports the effective altruism community. It was founded in 2012 by William MacAskill and Toby Ord, both philosophers at the University of Oxford.{{Cite web| last = Matthews| first = Dylan| title = Future perfect, explained| work = Vox| url = https://www.vox.com/future-perfect/2018/10/15/17924288/future-perfect-explained | date = 2018-10-15}}{{Cite web| last = Bajekal| first = Naina| title = Want to do more good? History
CEA's founding was prompted by the need to set up an umbrella organization under which Giving What We Can and 80,000 Hours could be incorporated.{{Cite web| last = Bajekal| first = Naina| title = Want to do more good? This movement might have the answer| work = Time| accessdate = 2022-08-10| date = 2022-08-10| url = https://time.com/6204627/effective-altruism-longtermism-william-macaskill-interview/}} In late 2011, the members of those two organizations met to discuss how this new entity should be named, and the name "Centre for Effective Altruism" was adopted. At the time, the movement that would later be called "effective altruism" did not yet have a standard name—terms common back then included "optimal philanthropy"{{Cite web| last = Muehlhauser| first = Luke| title = Optimal philanthropy for human beings| work = LessWrong| accessdate = 2022-09-20| date = 2011-07-25| url = https://www.lesswrong.com/posts/hEqsWLm5zQtsPevd3/optimal-philanthropy-for-human-beings}} and "rational altruism"{{Cite web| last = Karnofsky| first = Holden| title = In memory of Aaron Swartz| work = The GiveWell Blog| accessdate = 2022-09-20| date = 2013-01-16| url = https://blog.givewell.org/2013/01/16/in-memory-of-aaron-swartz/}}—and this was the first time the term "effective altruism" was used in its current sense.{{Cite news| issn = 0028-792X| last = Lewis-Kraus| first = Gideon| title = The reluctant prophet of effective altruism| work = The New Yorker| accessdate = 2022-08-08| date = 2022-08-08| url = https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2022/08/15/the-reluctant-prophet-of-effective-altruism}}{{Cite web| last = Matthews| first = Dylan| title = How effective altruism went from a niche movement to a billion-dollar force| work = Vox| accessdate = 2022-08-08| date = 2022-08-08| url = https://www.vox.com/future-perfect/2022/8/8/23150496/effective-altruism-sam-bankman-fried-dustin-moskovitz-billionaire-philanthropy-crytocurrency}}{{Cite web| last = MacAskill| first = William| title = The history of the term 'effective altruism'| work = Effective Altruism Forum| accessdate = 2022-09-20|date = 2014-03-10 | url = https://forum.effectivealtruism.org/posts/9a7xMXoSiQs3EYPA2/the-history-of-the-term-effective-altruism}} CEA was registered as a charity the following year.{{Cite web| last = Bajekal| first = Naina| title = Want to do more good? In 2015 and 2016, CEA incorporated several projects, including Effective Altruism Global and Giving What We Can, and began to function as a centralized organization, rather than merely as an umbrella. Sam Bankman-Fried joined CEA as director of development in late 2017, leaving shortly thereafter to fund Alameda Research.{{Cite web| title = Sam Bankman-Fried {{!}} 2021 40 Under 40| work = Fortune| accessdate = 2022-09-20| date = 2021| url = https://fortune.com/40-under-40/2021/sam-bankman-fried/}} In 2018, CEA launched a new version of the Effective Altruism Forum, based on the LessWrong codebase.{{Cite web| last = Habryka| first = Oliver| title = The new Effective Altruism forum just launched| work = LessWrong| accessdate = 2022-09-23| date = 2018-11-08| url = https://www.lesswrong.com/posts/Pkk6LziSsCMi8TWzw/the-new-effective-altruism-forum-just-launched}}
In 2022, the division of CEA providing operations support and fiscal sponsorship to several projects changed its name to "Effective Ventures".{{Cite web| last = Effective Ventures| title = EV’s Structure and Charitable Status| work = Effective Ventures| accessdate = 2022-09-20| date = 2022-09-20| url = https://ev.org/charity/}} The rest of CEA now operates as one of Effective Ventures’ many projects, which besides Giving What We Can and 80,000 Hours, include EA Funds, the Forethought Foundation, the Centre for the Governance of AI, Longview Philanthropy, Asterisk, Atlas Fellowship, and Non-trivial.{{Cite web| last = Effective Ventures Ops| title = CEA Ops is now EV Ops| work = Effective Altruism Forum| accessdate = 2022-09-20| date = 2022-09-13| url = https://forum.effectivealtruism.org/posts/9gHTYC5qbSH9E37vx/cea-ops-is-now-ev-ops}} CEA continues to pursue its mission to build and nurture a global community of people who are thinking carefully about the world's biggest problems and taking impactful action to solve them.{{Cite web| last = Centre For Effective Altruism| title = What is CEA?| work = Centre For Effective Altruism| accessdate = 2022-09-19| date = 2022| url = https://www.centreforeffectivealtruism.org/what-is-cea}}

In 2022, the Centre for Effective Altruism launched and fiscally sponsored Asterisk magazine as a quarterly magazine.{{Cite web |last=Collier |first=Clara |date=2022-05-26 |title=Introducing Asterisk |url=https://forum.effectivealtruism.org/posts/Mts84Mv5cFHRYBBA8/introducing-asterisk |website=Effective Altruism Forum |language=en}}
Activities
As of 2022, CEA's primary activities include organizing the Effective Altruism Global conference series;{{Cite web| title = EA Global - The effective altruism community's annual conference| work = Effective Altruism Global| accessdate = 2022-09-20| date = 2022| url = https://www.eaglobal.org/}} building and maintaining the Effective Altruism Forum and the effective altruism landing page;{{Cite web| title = Effective Altruism| accessdate = 2022-09-20| date = 2022| url = https://www.effectivealtruism.org/}} funding and advising hundreds of effective altruism groups across the world;{{Cite web| last = Effective Altruism Forum| title = Community| work = Effective Altruism Forum| accessdate = 2022-09-20| date = 2022| url = https://forum.effectivealtruism.org/community}} and preserving the effective altruism community's ability to grow and produce value in the future by building a healthy intellectual culture and an inclusive community.{{Cite web| last = Centre For Effective Altruism| title = CEA's Strategy {{!}} Centre For Effective Altruism| work = Centre For Effective Altruism| accessdate = 2022-09-20| date = 2022| url = https://www.centreforeffectivealtruism.org/strategy}}
CEA's offices are in Trajan House, a building that also accommodates many other organizations connected with the effective altruism movement, including the Forethought Foundation, the Centre for the Governance of AI, the Global Challenges Project, and the Global Priorities Institute; the latter is also part of the University of Oxford.{{Cite news| issn = 0028-792X| last = Lewis-Kraus| first = Gideon| title = The reluctant prophet of effective altruism| work = The New Yorker| accessdate = 2022-08-08| date = 2022-08-08| url = https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2022/08/15/the-reluctant-prophet-of-effective-altruism}}{{Cite web| last = Centre For Effective Altruism| title = EA hub office manager| work = Centre For Effective Altruism| accessdate = 2022-09-20| date = 2021| url = https://www.centreforeffectivealtruism.org/careers/office-manager-oxford-ea-hub}}
