CodeIgniter is a free and open-source software rapid development web framework, for use in building dynamic web sites with PHP.{{Cite web |title=CodeIgniter – The lightweight of the PHP frameworks |url=https://www.ionos.com/digitalguide/websites/web-development/codeigniter-the-lean-php-framework/ |access-date=2022-03-30 |website=IONOS Digitalguide |language=en}}

Popularity

CodeIgniter is loosely based on the popular model–view–controller (MVC) development pattern. While controller classes are a necessary part of development under CodeIgniter, models and views are optional.{{cite web|url=http://www.codeigniter.com/user_guide/general/models.html|title=CodeIgniter User Guide: Models|publisher=CodeIgniter.com|access-date=2015-02-03|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20150203160818/http://www.codeigniter.com/user_guide/general/models.html|archive-date=2015-02-03|url-status=dead}} CodeIgniter can be also modified to use Hierarchical Model View Controller (HMVC{{Cite web|url=https://bitbucket.org/wiredesignz/codeigniter-modular-extensions-hmvc|title=wiredesignz / codeigniter-modular-extensions-hmvc — Bitbucket|website=bitbucket.org|access-date=2016-05-05}}) which allows the developers to maintain modular grouping of Controller, Models and View arranged in a sub-directory format.

CodeIgniter is most often noted for its speed when compared to other PHP frameworks.{{cite web|url=http://www.tisindia.com/blog/7-best-php-frameworks-2014/ |title=7 Best PHP Frameworks |publisher=TISindia.com |date=2014-02-12}}{{cite web |url=http://www.sellersrank.com/web-frameworks-benchmarking-results/ |title=PHP Frameworks Benchmarks |publisher=Sellersrank.com |access-date=2014-08-05 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20141215222655/http://www.sellersrank.com/web-frameworks-benchmarking-results/ |archive-date=2014-12-15 |url-status=dead }}{{cite web |url=http://pr0digy.com/codeigniter/benchmark-update-static-cake-codeigniter-kohana/ |title=Benchmark update: Cake vs. CodeIgniter vs. Kohana |publisher=Pr0digy.com |date=2008-09-03 |access-date=2014-08-05 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20140614195025/http://pr0digy.com/codeigniter/benchmark-update-static-cake-codeigniter-kohana/ |archive-date=2014-06-14 |url-status=usurped }} In a critical take on PHP frameworks in general, PHP creator Rasmus Lerdorf spoke at frOSCon in August 2008, noting that he liked CodeIgniter "because it is faster, lighter and the least like a framework."{{cite web|url=http://www.sitepoint.com/rasmus-lerdorf-php-frameworks-think-again/ |title=Rasmus Lerdorf: PHP Frameworks?
