Deleya halophila (also known as Halomonas halophila) is a salt-loving, gram-negative bacteria.{{cite journal|last1=Quesada|first1=E.|last2=Ventosa|first2=A.|last3=Ruiz-Berraquero|first3=F.|last4=Ramos-Cormenzana|first4=A.|title=Deleya halophila, a New Species of Moderately Halophilic Bacteria|journal=International Journal of Systematic Bacteriology|volume=34|issue=3|year=1984|pages=287–292|issn=0020-7713|doi=10.1099/00207713-34-3-287|doi-access=free}} It is known to habitat marine environments, solar salterns, saline soils, and salted food. The genus was named after J. De Ley, a noted biologist. Its type strain is CCM 3662.
This particular species is anaerobic, rod-shaped and motile, thanks to possessing eight petritichous flagella. It grows optimally in 7.5% (wt/vol) sodium chloride solution. Albeit, salt shock is achieved with a concentration of 2-2.5M, affecting cell division and protein synthesis.{{cite journal|last1=Economou|first1=A.|last2=Roussis|first2=A.|last3=Milioni|first3=D.|last4=Katinakis|first4=P.|title=Patterns of protein synthesis in the moderately halophilic bacteriumDeleya halophilain response to sudden changes in external salinity|journal=FEMS Microbiology Letters|volume=62|issue=2|year=1989|pages=103–110|issn=0378-1097|doi=10.1111/j.1574-6968.1989.tb03662.x|doi-access=free}} Its reaction to heat shock is also associated with the medium's salt concentration.{{cite journal |vauthors=Karamanou S, Katinakis P |title=Heat shock proteins in the moderately halophilic bacterium Deleya halophila: protective effect of high salt concentration against thermal shock |journal=Annales De l'Institut Pasteur. This species is also a good exponent of biomineralisation, particularly precipitation of calcium carbonate.{{cite journal |vauthors=Rivadeneyra MA, Ramos-Cormenzana A, Delgado G, Delgado R |title=Process of Carbonate Precipitation by Deleya halophila |journal=Current Microbiology |volume=32 |issue=6 |pages=308–13 |date=June 1996 |doi=10.1007/s002849900055 |pmid=8661675 |s2cid=9927478 |url=http://link.springer-ny.com/link/service/journals/00284/bibs/32n6p308.html |access-date=2013-06-12 |url-status=dead |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20010911174931/http://link.springer-ny.com/link/service/journals/00284/bibs/32n6p308.html |archive-date=2001-09-11 |url-access=subscription }}{{cite journal|last1=Ferrer|first1=M.R.|last2=Quevedo-Sarmiento|first2=J.|last3=Bejar|first3=V.|last4=Delgado|first4=R.|last5=Ramos-Cormenzana|first5=A.|last6=Rivadeneyra|first6=M.A.|title=Calcium carbonate formation byDeleya halophila:Effect of salt concentration and incubation temperature|journal=Geomicrobiology Journal|volume=6|issue=1|year=1988|pages=49–57|issn=0149-0451|doi=10.1080/01490458809377821}}
