The Diponegoro class of guided-missile corvettes of the Indonesian Navy are SIGMA 9113 types of the Netherlands-designed Sigma family of modular naval vessels, named after Indonesian Prince Diponegoro. Currently there are four Diponegoro-class corvette in service.

History

The Indonesian variant is based on the Sigma 9113 design.{{cite web|title=Indonesian Specifications of the Sigma Class coverttes|url=http://www.scheldeshipbuilding.com/sigmacorvette.htm|url-status=dead|archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20110928162530/http://www.scheldeshipbuilding.com/sigmacorvette.htm|archivedate=2011-09-28|accessdate=2016-01-19|website=Scheldeshipbuilding.com}} Work on the first of the class, KRI Diponegoro, began with the first steel cutting conducted in October 2004. The ship was christened on 16 September 2006 and commissioned on 2 July 2007 by Admiral Slamet Soebijanto, Indonesian Navy Chief of Staff.{{cite web|title=ANTARA News: Navy chief takes delivery of corvette made in Netherlands|url=http://www.antara.co.id/en/arc/2007/7/3/navy-chief-takes-delivery-of-corvette-made-in-netherlands/|url-status=dead|archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20090410153424/http://www.antara.co.id/en/arc/2007/7/3/navy-chief-takes-delivery-of-corvette-made-in-netherlands/|archivedate=2009-04-10|accessdate=2016-01-19|website=Antara.co.id}}

Options for two other units were exercised in January 2006 with the first steel cut commenced on 3 April 2006{{cite web|title=Two SIGMA 9113 corvettes more for Indonesia|url=http://www.damen.nl/Upload/Downloads/mID_5708_cID_4719_DAMEN-NEWS-7-LR.pdf|url-status=dead|archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20061001005953/http://www.damen.nl/Upload/Downloads/mID_5708_cID_4719_DAMEN-NEWS-7-LR.pdf|archivedate=October 1, 2006}} in Damen's Schelde Naval Shipbuilding yard, Vlissingen-Oost yard and not in Surabaya stated earlier.

On 28 August 2007, Jane's Missiles and Rockets reported{{cite web|title=JMR: Indonesia evaluates C-802|url=http://www4.janes.com/subscribe/jni/doc_view.jsp?K2DocKey=/content1/janesdata/mags/jni/history/jni2010/jni73957.htm@current&Prod_Name=JNI&QueryText=|accessdate=2016-01-19|website=Janes.com}}{{dead link|date=March 2018|bot=InternetArchiveBot|fix-attempted=yes}} that Indonesia was having problems securing the export license for the MM-40 Exocet block II and are considering Chinese made C-802 anti-ship missiles as alternatives. However, the ships have already been delivered with the Exocet missiles. In 2019 MM40 Exocet Block III were launched from KRI Sultan Iskandar Muda (367).{{Cite web|title=Kapal Perang TNI Luncurkan Peluru Kendali Exocet MM 40 Block-3|url=https://daerah.sindonews.com/artikel/jateng/8637/kapal-perang-tni-luncurkan-peluru-kendali-exocet-mm-40-block3|access-date=2021-02-03|website=SINDOnews.com|language=id-ID}}

Modernisation

In early November 2022, PT Len and Thales Nederland has signed a contract to undertake the refurbishment of the integrated mission systems for all four Diponegoro-class ships. These ships will soon be refurbished with an Integrated Missions System including the TACTICOS Baseline 2 Combat Management System, the Naval Smarter (NS) 50 radar, as well as the latest in software-driven radar technology able to combat the highest level of threats.{{Cite web |last=Staff |first=Naval News |date=2022-11-09 |title=Thales to Upgrade Indonesia's Diponegoro-class Corvette CMS |url=https://www.navalnews.com/naval-news/2022/11/thales-to-upgrade-indonesias-diponegoro-class-corvette-cms/ |access-date=2022-11-13 |website=Naval News |language=en-US}}{{Cite web |last=Majumdar |first=Oishee |date=21 November 2022 |title=Thales, PT Len to upgrade Indonesian corvettes |url=https://www.janes.com/defence-news/news-detail/thales-pt-len-to-upgrade-indonesian-corvettes |access-date=2022-11-22 |website=Janes.com |language=en}}
