Review and events

Hartlepool United's 2023-24 season in the National League was marked by a tumultuous return to the league after two seasons in the fourth tier, including a change of managers. Whilst the club were clear of relegation concerns, the team fell short of mounting a serious promotion challenge.

John Askey remained the manager from the previous season, but was sacked at the end of December following a string of poor results with the club in 20th position. Lennie Lawrence took interim charge before, former England international Kevin Phillips was appointed, on a short term basis, as head coach on the 20th January 2024. Under his leadership, the team showed improvement, winning 4 of his first 5 games in charge and finished 12th in the table. Following the end of the season Phillips' departure was confirmed after his contract expired on the 27th April. Following his departure from Hartlepool, a statement from Phillips' representatives said that the club had offered him a two-year contract before later withdrawing their offer of a new contract. Phillips himself added that: "I have thoroughly enjoyed working at Hartlepool United and with all the existing staff there".
