The Ndito Abasi, Abasi People, or the Abasians are a people group indigenous to the contiguous land and water of Akwa Ibom and Cross River States in the South-South Zone, the most Southern and Eastern Coast of Nigeria. Subgroups of Abasi People include the Ibibio, Annang, Efik, Oro, Ekid, Ekoi and Obolo. The Abasi People share common identity derived from the name of God, "Abasi", with slight dialectical variations.
The Abasi People are the fourth-largest ethnic group in Nigeria with an estimated population of over 25 million people. They have one language, first written in Efik, with seven major dialects: Ibibio, Annang, Efik, Oro, Ekid, Ekoi and Obolo - in order of population.
Political representation
The Abasi People currently occupy the whole of Akwa Ibom State and Cross River South Senatorial District for a total of 38 Local Government Areas (LGAs) in four Senatorial Districts and 13 Federal Constituencies in contemporary Nigeria.
Of the 38 LGAs, there are 31 in Akwa Ibom State: Abak, Eastern Obolo, Eket, Esit Eket, Essien Udim, Etinan, Ibeno, Ibesikpo Asutan, Ibiono Ibom, Ika, Ikono, Ikot Abasi, Ikot Ekpene, Ini, Itu, Mbo, Mkpat Enin, Nsit Atai, Nsit Ibom, Nsit Ubium, Obot Akara, Okobo, Oron, Onna, Oruk Anam, Udung Uko, Urue Offong/Oruko, Uruan, Uyo, and Ukanafun). They have 7 LGAs in Cross River State: Akamkpa, Akpabuyo, Bakassi, Biase, Calabar South, Calabar Municipality and Odukpani.
The Ibibios indigenous to 14 LGAs of Akwa Ibom State are the largest with estimated population of over 10 million. The other dialects include Annang with 8 LGAs and over 5.5 million indigenes as the second largest. Efik with 5 LGAs in Cross River State and estimated population of over 3 million. Oro with 5 LGAs in Akwa Ibom State has a population in of over 2 million in Nigeria and more outside.
