Cali Life Style is a rap duo from Santa Maria, California, most notable for pioneering the Chicano rap style. The duo was formed in 1992 by rappers T-Dre and Dulex, often accompanied by producer DJ Dominator. They originally gained acclaim with their 1995 debut album, The Mexican Invasion, and its lead single, "Coastin". After the success of their debut album, they released their second album, Tell It Like It Is. Cali Life Style's sequel albums gained little recognition at their release due to the changing Chicano rap scene, but are now acclaimed for their integration of Chicano rap lyrics with 80s electro funk music.

History

Cali Life Style was formed in 1992, and started production on their debut album in 1994. The Mexican Invasion was released in 1995, and gained recognition in the underground Chicano scene in Santa Maria. Their sequel album, Tell It Like It Is was recorded in 1998, and released in 1999, now recognized as one of the duo's finer albums due to it's unique implementation of 80s electro funk samples. Their following albums gained little commercial success as they were overshadowed by rising stars in the Chicano rap scene, such as Lil Rob and Mr. Knightowl who utilized 50's groove and soul samples in combination with the Chicano rap style. The duo went on hiatus in 2009 after T Dre was incarcerated, and has switched from creating albums to singles in 2021. Today, Cali Life Style is recognized as an early player in the development of the Chicano rap scene, popularizing Chicano slang, and the use of electro funk samples.
