Edge Hill is situated in the Yidinji traditional Aboriginal country.{{Cite web|title=First people cultural history|url=https://www.cairns.qld.gov.au/community-environment/first-people/culture-history|access-date=23 June 2020|publisher=Cairns Regional Council|archive-date=9 April 2020|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20200409215848/https://www.cairns.qld.gov.au/community-environment/first-people/culture-history|url-status=dead}}

The origin of the suburb name is from the name given to the township developed near the historical Edgecliff quarry site. This township became known as Edge Hill because of the location situated on the foothills of Mount Whitfield.{{Cite web|title=Cairns Heritage: E Suburbs|url=https://www.cairns.qld.gov.au/__data/assets/pdf_file/0017/11834/ESuburbs.pdf|access-date=12 July 2020|publisher=Cairns Regional Council|archive-date=22 April 2018|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20180422210208/http://www.cairns.qld.gov.au/__data/assets/pdf_file/0017/11834/ESuburbs.pdf|url-status=dead}}
