Japan have appeared in the FIFA World Cup on seven occasions, the first being in 1998 where they lost all three group games and finished in 31st position. Masashi Nakayama scored Japan's first ever goal in a World Cup match against Jamaica on 26 June 1998 in a 2{{ndash}}1 defeat.{{cite web|url = http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/soccer/world/events/1998/worldcup/news/1998/06/26/japan_jamaica/|archive-url = https://web.archive.org/web/20000915082152/http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/soccer/world/events/1998/worldcup/news/1998/06/26/japan_jamaica/|url-status = dead|archive-date = September 15, 2000|title= 2-1 victory over Japan lifts the Reggae Boyz|date=19 September 1998|work=Sports Illustrated|access-date=15 January 2014}} Keisuke Honda became the first Japanese player to score in three World Cups: 2010, 2014, 2018.{{cite web|url = https://english.kyodonews.net/news/2018/06/c9492deec26c-soccer-super-sub-honda-makes-history-with-goal-against-senegal.html|title= Super sub Honda makes history with goal against Senegal|date= 9 June 2018| work=Kyodo News|access-date=26 June 2018}}
Japan made their seventh and most recent appearance at the finals at the 2022 tournament in Qatar. In 2018, Japan became the first ever Asian nation to beat a side from South America, after they won 2{{ndash}}1 against Colombia in the group stage. The team has progressed to the round of 16 on four occasions, 2002 (as joint-hosts), 2010, 2018 and 2022.
