The John Llewellyn Rhys Prize was a literary prize awarded annually for the best work of literature (fiction, non-fiction, poetry, drama) by an author from the Commonwealth aged 35 or under, written in English and published in the United Kingdom.[http://www.booktrust.org.uk/prizes-and-awards/3 John Llewellyn Rhys Prize "John Llewellyn Rhys Prize"] {{Webarchive|url=https://web.archive.org/web/20121124140327/http://www.booktrust.org.uk/prizes-and-awards/3 |date=24 November 2012 }}. Booktrust. Retrieved 29 January 2011. Established in 1942, it was one of the oldest literary awards in the UK.

Since 2011, the award has been suspended by funding problems.{{Cite news |last=Flood |first=Alison |date=2011-06-29 |title=John Llewellyn Rhys prize 'suspended' |language=en-GB |work=The Guardian |url=https://www.theguardian.com/books/2011/jun/29/john-llewellyn-rhys-prize-suspended |access-date=2023-06-01 |issn=0261-3077 |archive-date=3 May 2018 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20180503042623/https://www.theguardian.com/books/2011/jun/29/john-llewellyn-rhys-prize-suspended |url-status=live }}{{Cite news |last=Leith |first=Sam |date=2011-07-03 |title=And the winner of the Fray Bentos prize for postmodern fiction is . . . |language=en-GB |work=The Guardian |url=https://www.theguardian.com/culture/2011/jul/03/sam-leith-literary-prizes |access-date=2023-06-01 |issn=0261-3077 |archive-date=18 October 2015 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20151018101634/http://www.theguardian.com/culture/2011/jul/03/sam-leith-literary-prizes |url-status=live }} The last award was in 2010.Alison Flood. History

The prize was initiated in 1942 by Jane Oliver in memory of her husband, John Llewellyn Rhys, a young author who was killed on 5 August 1940 while serving as a bomber pilot in the Royal Air Force.

From 1987 to 2003, the prize was funded by The Mail on Sunday. The newspaper withdrew in 2003, after the initial winner of 2002 prize, Hari Kunzru, rejected the prize and criticised the Mail of Sunday for "hostility towards black and Asian people"{{cite book |last1=Liao |first1=Pei-chen |title=Crossing the Borders of the Body Politic after 9/11: The Virus Metaphor and Autoimmunity in Hari Kunzru's Transmission |date=2013 |publisher=Palgrave Macmillan |location=London |isbn=978-1-349-34594-6 |page=53 |doi=10.1057/9781137 |doi-broken-date=9 December 2024 |url=https://doi.org/10.1057/9781137 |access-date=9 March 2024}} Subsequently, the prize was sponsored by BookTrust, an independent educational charity, but in June 2011 the award was suspended due to funding problems. Booktrust said that it "strongly" intended to bring the award "back with a bang as soon as possible" as it looked for outside funding sources.

In 2010, the winner received £5,000, while the runners-up each received £500.
