The San Francisco Giants are a Major League Baseball (MLB) franchise based in San Francisco, California. They play in the National League West division. Officially known as the "First-Year Player Draft", the Rule 4 Draft is MLB's primary mechanism for assigning players from high schools, colleges, and other amateur clubs to its franchises. The draft order is determined based on the previous season's standings, with the team possessing the worst record receiving the first pick.{{cite web|url=http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/draftday/rules.jsp|title=First-Year Player Draft Rules|work=MLB.com|access-date=March 24, 2011|url-status=live|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20110605131548/http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/draftday/rules.jsp|archive-date=June 5, 2011}} In addition, teams which lost free agents in the previous off-season may be awarded compensatory or supplementary picks.{{cite web|url=http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20081126&content_id=3694740&vkey=news_mil&fext=.jsp&c_id=mil&partnerId=rss_mil|title=Brewers offer three arbitration|last=McCalvy|first=Adam|publisher=MLB|work=Milwaukee Brewers|access-date=March 24, 2011|date=December 1, 2008|url-status=live|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20110629194617/http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20081126&content_id=3694740&vkey=news_mil&fext=.jsp&c_id=mil&partnerId=rss_mil|archive-date=June 29, 2011}} Since the establishment of the draft in 1965, the Giants have selected 70 players in the first round.
Of those 70 players, 32 have been pitchers, the most of any position; 23 of these were right-handed, while 9 were left-handed. The Giants have also selected thirteen outfielders, seven shortstops, seven catchers, four third basemen, and three players each at first and second base.{{cite web|url=https://www.baseball-reference.com/draft/?query_type=franch_round&team_ID=SFG&draft_round=1&draft_type=junreg|title=San Francisco Giants 1st Round Picks in the MLB June Amateur Draft|work=Baseball-Reference.com|access-date=March 5, 2011|url-status=live|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20110624112420/http://www.baseball-reference.com/draft/?query_type=franch_round&team_ID=SFG&draft_round=1&draft_type=junreg|archive-date=June 24, 2011}} One player, 2010 selection Gary Brown, was drafted as a center fielder. The franchise has drafted eight players from colleges or high schools in their home state of California, more than any other. The Giants have never held the first-overall pick, but they did have the second pick in 1985, with which they drafted Will Clark.
Four of San Francisco's first-round draft picks have won three World Series championships with the team—Matt Cain, Tim Lincecum, Madison Bumgarner, and Buster Posey—all as part of the 2010, 2012 and 2014 championship teams. Footnotes
- {{note label|Value|V|V}}Free agents are evaluated by the Elias Sports Bureau and rated "Type A", "Type B", or not compensation-eligible. If a team offers arbitration to a player but that player refuses and subsequently signs with another team, the original team may receive additional draft picks. If a "Type A" free agent leaves in this way his previous team receives a supplemental pick and a compensation pick from the team with which he signs. If a "Type B" free agent leaves in this way his previous team receives only a supplemental pick.{{cite web|url=http://mlbplayers.mlb.com/pa/releases/releases.jsp?content=102406|work=MLB.com Players Association|title=MLB, MLBPA reach five-year labor accord|access-date=March 5, 2011|date=October 24, 2006|url-status=live|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20080621170636/http://mlbplayers.mlb.com/pa/releases/releases.jsp?content=102406|archive-date=June 21, 2008}}
