:Phosphoryl nitride
{{Short description|A molecule with formula "OPN".}}
Phosphoryl nitride in chemistry is a reactive intermediate with the structure OPN.{{Cite journal|title=OPN and SPN: Small Molecules with Great Potential|journal=Angewandte Chemie International Edition|last1=Himmel|first1=H.-J.|volume=51|pages=5541–5542|last2=Linti|first2=G.|issue=23|doi=10.1002/anie.201201638|year=2012|pmid=22532508}} It is a linear oxygen phosphorus nitrogen molecule with a formal double bond between P and O (phosphoryl) and a triple bond (nitride) between P and N. It can be obtained in argon matrix isolation at 16 K by laser photolysis of phosphoryl triazide, OP(N3)3.{{Cite journal|title=Elusive O═P≡N, a Rare Example of Phosphorus σ2λ5-Coordination|journal=Journal of the American Chemical Society|last1=Zeng|first1=X.|volume=133|pages=20696–20699|last2=Beckers|first2=H.|issue=51|doi=10.1021/ja2091867|last3=Willner|first3=H.|year=2011|pmid=22117167}} OPN and its isomer ONP can interconvert by photoisomerization. Both are valence isoelectronic to Nitrous oxide.
Bulk phosphoryl nitride has many polymorphs, similar to its isoelectronic counterpart, silicon dioxide.{{cite journal | last=Lv | first=Zhen‐Long | last2=Lv | first2=Shi‐Jie | last3=Wang | first3=Kai‐Tong | last4=Cui | first4=Hong‐Ling | title=Electronic, Elastic, Piezoelectric, and Infrared Properties of 2D Phosphorus Oxynitride by First Principles | journal=physica status solidi (b) | volume=261 | issue=5 | date=2024 | issn=0370-1972 | doi=10.1002/pssb.202400074}}
