Mechanism
First OH- adds rapidly to one molecule of the aldehyde resulting in the formation of a hydroxy alkoxide ion. This ion acts as a hydride-ion donor to the second molecule of aldehyde. This is the slow step. Finally, the acid and alkoxide ions formed exchange protons through the solvent.
:In the presence of high concentration of base, the hydroxy alkoxide ion further reacts with the base to give a doubly charged anion. Now this acts as a hydride-ion donor to the second molecule of aldehyde. Subsequently, the alkoxide ion formed acquires a proton from the solvent.Roshan220195 (talk) 13:40, 21 January 2012 (UTC)

The mechanisms given on the page don't look quite complete to me. Shouldn't there be an arrow from the O- "kicking in" to push out the hydride? Also, shouldn't there be an extra arrow when the OH attacks the aldehyde?
