Steepest street in the world?
Why don't people consider this the steepest street in the world? If it has a grade of 37%, and Baldwin Street has a max. grade of 35%, wouldn't Canton Ave. be the steepest street in the world? I don't get how people say that Baldwin Street is steeper, when Canton Ave is actually steeper? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.182.228.142 (talk) 12:54, 26 September 2008 (UTC)
:It's 37% at its steepest point. That may only be a few feet. It may well be somewhat less that that for much of its length. Baldwin St. is 35% over a considerable distance. You may find that if you measure Baldwin Street very precisely that there may be a stretch of a few feet that is more than 35%. Thus Baldwin St. having 35% over an extended distance is considered the steepest203.196.80.97 (talk) 10:20, 27 April 2012 (UTC)
:It's probably nothing more than that no one has bothered to challenge Guiness to change it. Tragic romance (talk) 09:14, 10 March 2009 (UTC)

:::The "Fast Track" Guinness world record application is a large sum of money; $500ish? I've put Canton Avenue into their general queue of record attempts on [http://www.guinnessworldrecords.com/ http://www.guinnessworldrecords.com/], and will check back here if I hear back. Dean (talk) 16:34, 12 March 2009 (UTC)
https://developers.google.com/maps/documentation/javascript/examples/elevation-simple indicates the grade averages just under 30% for 65 meters. If that's near true, then if the hill does include any 37% grade that steep bit would be easy to pick out. So far no evidence that it exists--just "somebody said"-- but if any locals rent a surveyor's level and a rod it would be easy to check. Tim Zukas (talk) 19:47, 10 February 2014 (UTC)
:As of July 2019, the Guinness Book of World Records have recognized Ffordd Pen Llech as the steepest street, with an gradient of 37.45%. This means that Canton Avenue (with a claimed gradient of 37%) is not the steepest street in the world. +mt 23:47, 16 July 2019 (UTC)
::And as of April 2020, the Guinness Book of World Records has re-declared Baldwin Street as steepest, so this claim could still be made. +mt 01:56, 9 April 2020 (UTC)
Update
Recent work by http://www.weathersealed.com/2009/11/10/the-steeps-of-san-francisco/ suggests a re-ordering of the following paragraph. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Mankofffoo (talk • contribs) 16:57, 15 November 2009 (UTC)
