Hyposulfite, thiosulfate, dithionite? Disambiguation
thiosulfate is sometimes referred to as "hyposulfite". I'm making "hyposulfite" a disambiguation page if somebody could give me more info, especially on whether it can also refer to dithionite.--Thomas J. S. Greenfield (talk) 14:40, 13 March 2014 (UTC)
::Hypo (without the sulfite) was used in developing Silver based film images. Name had to do with physical characteristics of Sodium Thiosulfate Pentahydrate crystals. Older Merck Chemical Index (1978) noted tha distinction; the corrupted use of "hyposulfite" may be recent. Older, 1939, CRC Chemical Handbook had an appendix with film development formula that only used Hypo os Thiosulfate, as Sulfite had a separate purpose.
Hyposulfite existence
H2SO2 would be the inorganic analog of Sulfenic acid which is well known and characterized as a reaction intermediate. Note the duality similar to Hypophosphite. Sulfites, Sulfur Dioxide, and Sulfoxides have extensive literature on complexation of the Sulfur (as a soft lewis acid) to transition metal ions, the bond strengthened through back donation. There has been some evidence for Dithionite dissociation in single electron reductions as SO2- radical. Shjacks45 (talk) 18:08, 5 April 2014 (UTC)
