Although Groucho Marx made a joke about it on "You Bet Your Life," "Shamokin" has nothing to do with smoking. Sha- and its variants generally mean "Place of the..." Thus: CHIcago, SHEboygan, SHAmokin. [http://www.shs58.org/story3.html Chemung] — Also a river, a hamlet and the county where they reside, Chemung comes from the discovery of a mammoth tusk near the riverbed — a “big horn” to the Native Americans who called it “Shumounk” from the Algonquin words for horn and place — place of the big horn. History Duplication with Sunbury, PA

It looks like someone copied Sunbury's history and inserted it here. There are some changes, but there are obvious errors that are not yet corrected. One of the paragraphs intended to describe Shamokin actually names and describes Sunbury. It looks like it is a cut-and-paste from the other page. Finding errors like this could indicate that much of this page is not accurate. Someone with "real" knowledge of the town needs to review this page and correct the multitude of errors...

::::::::::::A few more issues. The pic showing a pile of coal...thats not coal. Thats called a waste pile, shale or slack. A reserve pile would be different, thats not a reserve pile. The section that is cut and paste is also closely worded or plagiarism. I have read that book, just cant recall the title. Another issue, Hard Coal.....Can we please use the word Anthracite? My folks mined soft coal or what we call bituminous. AND YES we would joke about who worked harder, hard or soft coal miners.....As to the Molly Maguires, MIGHT want to be careful, they did have a large presence but not in every coal town. As to the decline of Anthacite..no. There was a strike, and so coal purchasers went to WV and got their coal there. A little more specificity , decline means almost anything. Re proposed article 1877 Shamokin Uprising, not sure that this deserves an article separate from the Great RR Strike of 1877. Some twenty years ago, I spent a couple days reading microfilm newspaper articles on the 1877 riots in the Pottsville library. Let me bite my tongue: 1877 Shamokin Uprising (which I just saw) is an EXCELLENT start! The goal would be to integrate this account into the history of Shamokin.

A list of mayors is not bizarre; a list of contested mayoral elections (seriously incomplete at that) is very bizarre.

The first few paragraphs of the history section here look to have been copied from the Sunbury, Pennsylvania article. I have no idea if this is an issue, or, if so, how to deal with it. Since it has "phantom" footnote numbers, it seems at least that the citations from the Sunbury article should be brought in, right? Wouldn't some lovely not-me person like to sort this out?
