The article has experienced some vandalism but the paragraph concerned is well supported by its citation. In fact, the article says he holds the position, but it also says he's a member-elect: if he hasn't been sworn in yet, then he doesn't hold any position on the council. (He doesn't take office until January 2014.) FN1 may mention the first in the U.S. bit, but that hook fact is not in the article, and it must be for the hook to pass muster. Middayexpress removed the hook fact language because Ahmed M. Hassan was elected to a municipal office on the same day. I've added language that explains that they were simultaneously elected.
