Trichloronate is a highly toxic organophosphate insecticide.[http://cameochemicals.noaa.gov/chemical/5227 Trichloronate] at cameochemicals.noaa.gov. It is used against vegetable fly larvae and soil pests.

Case reports indicate exposure to the chemical can cause fatal encephalopathy.{{cite journal |vauthors=de Reuck J, Colardyn F, Willems J |title=Fatal encephalopathy in acute poisoning with organophosphorus insecticides. A clinico-pathologic study of two cases |journal=Clin Neurol Neurosurg |volume=81 |issue=4 |pages=247–54 |year=1979 |pmid=233207 |doi= 10.1016/0303-8467(79)90029-5|s2cid=27093634 }} Its aquatic toxicity has been measured at significantly higher against Ceriodaphnia dubia and Daphnia magna.{{cite journal |vauthors=Liu W, Lin K, Gan J |title=Separation and aquatic toxicity of enantiomers of the organophosphorus insecticide trichloronate |journal=Chirality |volume=18 |issue=9 |pages=713–6 |year=2006 |pmid=16845672 |doi=10.1002/chir.20323 }}
