Career

Martin Jesus Kozlowski began his creative career as a teenager. In 2007, he appeared on the Danish cultural talk show Den 11. time on DR2, performing a theatrical piano piece that combined minimalist music with abstract spoken word. The performance reflected his early interest in psychological states, and hinted at his cross-disciplinary style that would later characterize his work in film and music.

Kozlowski’s breakthrough came with the release of his short film 310804 in 2018, a deeply personal work based on his experiences with Asperger’s syndrome and childhood trauma. The film was praised for its stark minimalism and emotional restraint. It was selected at international festivals and won Best Director at the Lakecity International Short Film Festival and the Jury Prize at the Bangalore Shorts Film Festival. One festival juror remarked that “it does more in 12 minutes than many features.”

In 2020, Kozlowski followed up with Khushbu, the second film in his trilogy. It explored cross-cultural identity and emotional displacement, reflecting his time spent in India. Khushbu was selected at numerous festivals across Europe and Asia, and won Best Foreign Short at the Moonwhite Films International Film Fest. The film deepened his reputation as a filmmaker who fuses personal narratives with abstract cinematic language.

His third short, [,] (2022), was completed during the COVID-19 pandemic and focused on memory, isolation, and communication breakdown. Marked by long takes and the absence of spoken dialogue, it was noted for its meditative pace and haunting imagery. It premiered at multiple independent festivals and solidified the thematic arc of the trilogy.

In addition to filmmaking, Kozlowski has frequently spoken at festival panels about his commitment to neurodivergent representation and the use of non-traditional narrative structures. He has been featured in interviews by SIFF and Bangalore Shorts Film Festival, discussing how personal history informs his visual language.Film Market Talk – Bangalore Shorts Film FestivalInterview with Martin Jesus Kozlowski – SIFF/IFTC

Kozlowski continues to work primarily outside of mainstream production environments, often with self-funded projects and minimal crews. His work has been described by critics as “disarming,” “intimate,” and “psychologically raw.”{{cite web |last=Gerritsen |first=Laura |title=Martin kæmpede for at passe ind – det kunne han ikke finde ud af i virkeligheden: "Er det os, der kan lære noget af ham?" |url=https://kobenhavnliv.dk/samfund/martin-kaempede-for-at-passe-ind-det-kunne-han-ikke-finde-ud-af-i-virkeligheden-er-det-os-der-kan-laere-noget-af-ham |website=KøbenhavnLiv |publisher=JP/Politikens Hus |date=2024-10-15 |access-date=2025-06-19}}
