Prof. Venugopal Rao was born on January 6, 1961, in Eluru, Andhra Pradesh, India. He pursued his undergraduate and postgraduate education in commerce and management studies from Andhra University, Visakhapatnam before completing a doctoral degree in business administration from Sri Venkateswara University, Tirupati. His academic interests evolved to include marketing, organizational behavior, entrepreneurship, and strategic management. He pursued Faculty Development Program in Management (FDPM) from Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad in 1992.

Prof. Venugopal Rao began his academic career at Sri Krishnadevaraya University in December 1989. Over the years, he has held several academic and administrative roles, contributing to the growth of the university's Department of Management. He has supervised numerous PhD scholars and has been involved in designing and implementing MBA programs aligned with industry trends.

Prof. Venugopal Rao has actively participated in university-level administrative roles such as Dean, Director of Admissions, Head of the Department at Sri Krishnadevaraya University. He has served on NAAC, AICTE and UPSC panels demonstrating robust institutional insight. Prof. Venugopal Rao has contributed significantly to NAAC's mission by serving in various capacities - Chairman of NAAC peer teams, member coordinator and member for field visits, institutional reviews and academic audits across diverse geographies and institutional types. Additionally, he has focused on curriculum reform, faculty development, and strategic planning. He is also known for mentoring early-career academics and fostering collaboration between academic institutions and local industries.

Prof. Venugopal Rao is the author of several textbooks and case studies used in Indian business schools, and his research has focused on small business development, rural entrepreneurship, product and brand marketing and management education in emerging economies. He has published over 80 papers at national and international conferences and published articles in peer-reviewed journals. His work is recognized for its focus on practical business applications and relevance to policy development in Indian higher education.
