Red Trouser Day (RTD)
Red Trouser Day is a volunteer charity that raises funds in support of clinical research in the pursuit of earlier diagnosis for colorectal cancer (bowel cancer). It is an independent organisation that operates under the rules & guidelines of the UK Charities Commission and the UK Fund Raising Regulator. It comprises a large community of patients, volunteers & clinicians who are all focussed on improving outcomes through education & research into the prevention, early diagnosis and cure of colorectal cancer
Red Trouser Day was set up in 2016 following the successful recovery by its founder Paul Finch from a stage 4 bowel cancer diagnosis in 2014 with the support of his wife Julia George.
Paul was diagnosed in January 2014 with serious bowel cancer and underwent a programme of chemo & radiotherapy to treat the cancer over a period of 15 months including a major lung operation. He discovered via his treatment that bowel cancer can be difficult to diagnose in its early stages [citations tba] and that it was surprising that more sophisticated non-intrusive diagnostic tests for such a relatively common type of cancer{{Cite web |title=UK cancer statistics |url=https://www.wcrf.org/preventing-cancer/cancer-statistics/uk-cancer-statistics/?gad_source=1&gad_campaignid=21126970066&gbraid=0AAAAAD5ZFqcmAqihGU2rAKz0CnQzRHDPZ&gclid=Cj0KCQjwrPHABhCIARIsAFW2XBP9F3VEfPySqTiXY5Ei2StDlTVfdVLa7H3DMfxtNkQKpNCi5UlIQvoaAjN0EALw_wcB |access-date=2025-05-08 |website=World Cancer Research Fund |language=en-GB}} were not readily available at that time. Later diagnosis of bowel cancer meant that the scale of the life-saving surgery that advanced stage sufferers had to undergo was often severe [citation tba]
After his treatment, Paul had the aim of raising funds to support initiatives that worked on creating earlier bowel cancer diagnoses [citations tba]. The inspiration for Red Trouser Day itself came when he was in a restaurant in North London with friends. One of them asked him who had let him out in bright red trousers, and so Paul created the concept of "Red Trouser" fundraising events.
Red Trouser Day provides for the concept of Ambassadors and Champions rather than a central fundraising team. An Ambassador is someone who wishes to run a sizable fundraising event (probably public), whereas a Champion is someone who wishes to undertake a personal fund-raising event at home or work. All Champions and Ambassadors receive help from an Red Trouser Day Trustee as a mentor.
