Traditional Songs of Kathmandu
== -by Udaya Chitrakar ==
== Introduction: ==
Nepal is a nation rich in diverse languages, costumes, and cultures. Newars are native to this nation. They belong to the Mongol race. Over time, people from other castes also became mixed into the Newar community. The Newar people seem to have followed Theravad, Mahayana, or Bajrayana Buddhism. This religion is believed to have been spread by Bodhisatwa Mahamanjushree in the Kathmandu valley in ancient times.
In the Eastern countries, music is considered as a combination of music, song, and dance. The Newar community is considered to be good at music just like in other sectors such as literature, culture, and architecture. The Newar community seems to have been using hundreds of musical instruments for a long time. In the course of playing musical instruments, infinite rhythm, lyrics came into existence. Sadly, our ancestors did not record or document anything back then neither in written format nor audio format. As a result, we still don’t know the exact tune, melody, rhythm, and lyrics of that period and finally vanished. Whereas in the Western countries, however, there was customary to record music since five six hundred years ago, most of the European countries still do exist much older music and safe.
It would not be an exaggeration to say that literature, music, and art are like the common dowry of the Newar community. In our country Nepal is believed to have six seasons. The seasons keep changing and it affects the nature. The influence of the seasons also affects public life. Paddy sowing begins in the rainy season. At the time of sowing, farmers sing ‘Asare song’ with great excitement and joy in the muddy field. In Nepal, a year is divided into six seasons considering two months as one season.

According to geographers, there are four seasons in the Northern Hemisphere and the Southern Hemisphere.
Changes in seasons and livestock:
The effect of seasonal changes is not only on human life but also on the lives of animals. In the spring season, Cuckoo’s song makes us all very happy. Likewise, Peacock dance is also considered significantly beautiful during the rainy season. In this way, with the change of seasons, the activities of birds also vary.
Newa: music or Newar music is recognized as a traditional song developed by the Newar community. It is said that the relation of this music is associated with classical Hindu and Buddhist music. The origin of this song is believed to have been developed by combining the folk music of the Kathmandu valley and the music of the nearby communities. Most of the musical instruments that Newar community is using are from Percussion and Wind Instruments.As we all know that the Newar community has made significant contributions to culture, art, literature, trade, agriculture, and food.
Traditional Newa: music includes genres such as religious music, devotional music, folk music, and seasonal songs. Dhimay|Dhime is considered to be the most famous instrument of the Newar community. The Dhime has a cylindrical or barrel-like shape, made of wood or metal. It has two heads similar to a drum, which are often made from goat skin or other animal hides. The Dhime is used in rituals, dances, and festivals. It’s especially important in Newar culture, where it is played during religious ceremonies, weddings, and other cultural events. One of the significant values of any race is the literature as well as poetic song “Geeti Kabita”. Ballad (narrative poem “Geeti Katha”) is the refined version of poetic song or just song. The Ballad preserves a poignant event forever on the basis of verses and rhythms. According to legends, Manjushree taught music to her disciples Shantikaracharya and Gunakaracharya. Shantikaracharya bestowed his music to Bandhudatta Bajracharya whereas Gunakaracharya spread his music knowledge through his writings and later this became the base for the “Newari Classical Music”. According to mythology, the “Pachima{{Cite web |title=Nau Baja - The Traditional Newari Musical Instruments |date=6 August 2016 |url=https://kirajgainju.blogspot.com/2016/08/nau-baja-traditional-newari-musical.html}}” instrument is said to have been provided by Lord Shri Krishna and Lord Shiva invented the “Dhime” instrument.
Music is not just meant for cheap entertainment. Music has also been used to address physical as well as mental problems. Music has played a significant role in bringing the people of different countries emotionally closer and binding them together. There is no doubt that music plays a crucial role in bringing peace to the world.
