Career
Hu studied chemistry at Peking University and received his Bachelor’s degree in 2000. During his undergraduate, he worked with Jianhua Lin. He then joined the lab of Karsten Meyer at University of California, San Diego as PhD student and graduated with a thesis on "Metal complexes of tripodal N-heterocyclic carbene ligands: synthesis, structure, bonding, and reactivity."{{Cite web|last=Xile|first=Hu|date=|title=Metal Complexes of Tripodal N-Heterocyclic Carbene Ligands: Synthesis, Structure, Bonding, and Reactivity|url=https://www.epfl.ch/labs/lsci/wp-content/uploads/2018/09/HuThesis.pdf|access-date=|website=}}{{Cite journal|last1=Hu|first1=Xile|last2=Castro-Rodriguez|first2=Ingrid|last3=Olsen|first3=Kristian|last4=Meyer|first4=Karsten|date=2004-02-01|title=Group 11 Metal Complexes of N-Heterocyclic Carbene Ligands: Nature of the MetalCarbene Bond|url=https://doi.org/10.1021/om0341855|journal=Organometallics|volume=23|issue=4|pages=755–764|doi=10.1021/om0341855|issn=0276-7333}} In 2005, he went to work as postdoctoral researcher with Jonas C. Peters at the California Institute of Technology. Here he initiated and developed a research project on molecular electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution.{{Cite journal|last1=Hu|first1=Xile|last2=Brunschwig|first2=Bruce S.|last3=Peters|first3=Jonas C.|date=2007-07-01|title=Electrocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution at Low Overpotentials by Cobalt Macrocyclic Glyoxime and Tetraimine Complexes|url=https://doi.org/10.1021/ja067876b|journal=Journal of the American Chemical Society|volume=129|issue=29|pages=8988–8998|doi=10.1021/ja067876b|pmid=17602556|issn=0002-7863}}
In 2007, he became Assistant Professor of chemistry at EPFL. In 2013, he was promoted as Associate Professor, and in 2016, he became Full Professor at EPFL. Since 2007 he has led the Laboratory of Inorganic Synthesis and Catalysis at EPFL's School of Basic Sciences.
