I'm a geologist, specialising in volcanoes and volcanic rocks, but I'm also very interested in all aspects of geology.

I have been contributing to Wikipedia since October 2006.

Since 2009, I have been uploading photos of geology to Wikimedia Commons. [https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:ListFiles/GeoWriter My Wikimedia Commons photo gallery] I also categorise geology photos and add details to geology photo descriptions and locations.

Random things that I have learned from Wikipedia

  • East Anglia in England is named after the Anglia (peninsula) region of Denmark and Germany, but East Anglia is west of that Anglia. (I already knew that East Anglia is actually an eastern part of the other Anglia: Kingdom of East Anglia).
  • Somalia has mean daily minimum temperatures usually above 15°C but it has a national bandy association. Bandy is like (field) hockey on ice.
  • August seems to be a good month to observe pumice rafts.
  • The West Pacific Ocean is in the Eastern Hemisphere; the East Pacific Ocean is in the Western Hemisphere (because east and west are defined by the boundary between the east and west hemispheres on the other side of the world at Greenwich in London).
  • Geyser is an English word for an eruptive hot spring. The word is a common noun derived from a proper noun — the name of a major geyser named "Geysir" in Iceland — but the Icelandic word for a geyser is actually goshver not geyser.

Errors, misunderstandings and myths about geological subjects in Wikipedia

  • "Chemical elements are not minerals". This is wrong. Some elements are elements (obviously) but are also minerals.
