During the COVID-19 pandemic, the town was also in the spotlight of national media and of social media, because the ethnic Roma of the town were accused of bringing the virus from Western Europe and not respecting the anti-COVID measurements implemented by the government.{{Cite journal |last=Plainer |first=Zsuzsa |date=2020-09-01 |title="The Roma in Țăndărei": A few thoughts on prejudices and groupism in media representations of the Romanian Roma during the COVID-19 pandemic| url=https://journals.lib.pte.hu/index.php/szocialisszemle/article/view/3374 |journal=Szociális Szemle |volume=13 |issue=1 |pages=5–10 |doi=10.15170/SocRev.2020.13.01.01}}
