.pn is the Internet country code top-level domain (ccTLD) for the Pitcairn Islands.

Use

An official .pn domain costs $100 per year from the registry. There are relatively few sites using these domains, but examples include ESPN,{{cite web |url=http://es.pn/ |title= es.pn |work= ESPN }} Experian,http://ex.pn/security/. Experian. C-SPAN,{{Cite web |date=2023-01-15 |title=cs.pn |url=https://cs.pn/ |url-status=usurped |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20220404023111/https://cs.pn/ |archive-date=2022-04-04 |access-date=2023-01-15 |website=cs.pn}} happn,https://gethap.pn. happn. and Groupon,{{cite web |url=http://gr.pn |title= gr.pn |work= Groupon }} each of whom use the domain for URL shortening services.

Subdomains under various two-letter .pn domains were offered as free redirections and as domain names by numerous providers. In August 2017, Free EU Hosting, one such provider, announced that due to reputation fears they will be discontinuing their popular eu.pn and me.pn subdomains and that they will eventually stop working, offering existing customers alternative subdomains.{{cite web|title=Latest News and Important Updates - All .eu.pn/.me.pn websites might stop working soon|url=https://www.freehostingeu.com/news-page.php|website=Free EU Hosting|access-date=18 November 2017|language=en|date=30 August 2017}}

The .pn domain is also used as part of a Lionsgate marketing campaign promoting the Hunger Games film series, presenting it as the "official" country code of the fictional nation of Panem,{{cite web |title= How The Hunger Games Marketing is Funding A Small Island Government |url=https://www.themarysue.com/hunger-games-marketing/ |first= Elizabeth |last= Giorgi |date= 17 January 2012 |work= Mary Sue }} with domains for the Capitol{{cite web |archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20181025083542/https://www.thecapitol.pn/ |archivedate= 25 October 2018 |url=http://thecapitol.pn |title= The Capitol |work= Hunger Games }} and the rebellion.{{cite web |url=http://revolution.pn |title= revolution.pn |work= The Hunger Games }}

Management

ICANN originally delegated the management of the domain to islander Tom Christian. In 2000, the government of Pitcairn Island wrote a letter to the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority stating that Christian did not "adequately serve the interests of the country and community of Pitcairn Island" and requesting reassignment of the delegation of the top-level domain to the office of the governor of Pitcairn Island.{{cite web |url=https://archive.icann.org/en/general/pn-commissioner-request-08sep97.jpg |title= Letter to IANA |first= Leon H. |last= Salt |work= Government of Picairn Island }} The dispute was resolved when ICANN ruled that the domain would be re-delegated to the Pitcairn Island Council.{{cite web |title= Request of the Pitcairn Island Council for Redelegation of .pn Top-Level Domain |url=https://archive.icann.org/en/general/pn-report-11feb00.htm |date= 11 February 2000 |work= Internet Assigned Numbers Authority }}

Structure

The registrations are taken directly at the second level, and at third level under a number of reserved second level domains.{{Cite web |date=2023-01-15 |title=.pn Policies |url=https://www.government.pn/PnRegistry/policies.htm |url-status=live |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20221223055043/https://www.government.pn/PnRegistry/policies.htm |archive-date=2022-12-23 |access-date=2023-01-15 |website=Pitcairn Island Domain Names}}
