Pterosaurs

  • Soemmering reported the discovery of a second pterosaur specimen. This second specimen was smaller than the first, with a 25 cm wingspan, and possessed a shorter snout. These traits mislead Soemmering into greater confidence in his interpretation of pterosaurs as bats. This specimen reminded him of the parti-colored bat. He named this fossil Ornithocephalus brevirostris.{{Cite journal |last=von Sömmerring |first=S.T. |date=1817 |title=Ueber einen Ornithocephalus brevirostris der Vorwelt |url=http://publikationen.ub.uni-frankfurt.de/frontdoor/index/index/year/2008/docId/15330 |journal=Denkschriften der Bayerischen Akademie der Wissenschaften |language=de |volume=6 |pages=89–104}}{{Cite journal |ref= wellnhofer-2008 |author=Wellnhofer, Peter|year=2008 |title=A short history of pterosaur research. |journal=Zitteliana B |volume=28 |pages=7–19}}
