The 1904–05 Scottish Division One season was won by Celtic. Celtic and Rangers had finished the league campaign level on 41 points, and a play-off at Hampden Park (doubling up as a fixture in the minor Glasgow Football League) was arranged to decide the championship. An English-based referee was drafted in to officiate at the match due to increasing tensions between the two groups of supporters and controversies in recent matches between the sides. Celtic won 2–1, with Jimmy McMenemy and Davie Hamilton scoring the decisive goals.{{cite web|last=Brown|first=Alan|title=Scotland 1904/05|url=https://www.rsssf.org/tabless/scot1905.html|website=Rec.Sport.Soccer Statistics Foundation|access-date=9 October 2017|date=22 March 2002}}{{cite news|last=Murphy|first=Alex|title=Another championship nailbiter thanks to mighty Quinn|url=http://www.thecelticwiki.com/page/1905-05-06%3A+Celtic+2-1+Rangers%2C+League+Division+1%2C+Championship+Play-off|access-date=9 October 2017|work=The Times (hosted at The Celtic Wiki)|date=19 May 2005}}{{cite news|last=Hannan|first=Martin|title=1905: The last time Scotland drafted in a foreign referee |url=http://www.scotsman.com/sport/1905-the-last-time-scotland-drafted-in-a-foreign-referee-1-1370563|access-date=9 October 2017|work=The Scotsman|date=27 November 2010}}

The 'Old firm' clubs (a term recently employed for the growing commercial draw of the frequent fixtures between them) had already been involved in two other unusual matches during that season:

  • The pivotal New Year's Day fixture at Ibrox had to be abandoned in the second half – the unexpectedly large crowd in attendance (estimated at 70,000) was cleared from the pitch to allow play to start, but spectators continued to spill on at regular intervals, with the contemporary report noting that "the game assumed a farcical order" as a result.[http://www.thecelticwiki.com/page/1905-01-01%3A+Rangers+0-0+Celtic%2C+Scottish+League+%28match+abandoned%29 Rangers V Celtic], 2 January 1905 (newspaper scan via The Celtic Wiki) the match was eventually played to a conclusion on 18 February 1905, with Celtic winning 4–1.[https://news.google.com/newspapers?id=RPRAAAAAIBAJ&sjid=qKYMAAAAIBAJ&pg=4818%2C5187704 Notes On Sport. {{!}} Rangers Routed at Ibrox...], The Glasgow Herald, 20 February 1905
  • The Scottish Cup semi-final between the clubs, played at Celtic Park on 25 March, was abandoned on 80 minutes with Rangers two goals ahead when supporters invaded the field and confronted the referee after Celtic striker Jimmy Quinn had been sent off for violent conduct.[https://news.google.com/newspapers?id=Ws5AAAAAIBAJ&sjid=YaYMAAAAIBAJ&pg=5453%2C2839598 Football. {{!}} Scottish Cup–Semi-Final Ties.], The Glasgow Herald, 26 March 1905 The opponent he was accused of kicking, Alex Craig, offered a statement exonerating Quinn but the Scottish Football Association imposed a one-month ban[http://www.thecelticwiki.com/page/1905-03-25%3A+Celtic+0-2+Rangers%2C+Scottish+Cup The Quinn Affair], The Glasgow Herald, 30 March 1905, via The Celtic Wiki – however, Celtic had already completed all their league fixtures, and by the time of the play-off Quinn had served the ban and took part in the match.
