The 1916 Philadelphia Athletics season was the 16th season of the Philadelphia Athletics baseball franchise. The team concluded the season in eighth place within the American League, achieving a record of 36 wins against 117 losses. Baseball historians frequently regard the 1916 Athletics as the poorest-performing team in the history of the American League,{{cite book|last=Pahigian|first=Josh|year=2010|title=The Seventh Inning Stretch: Baseball's Most Essential and Inane Debates|location=Guilford, Connecticut|publisher=Globe Pequot Press|isbn=978-1-59921-805-2|page=151}} with a winning percentage of .235, which remains the lowest for any modern major league team since 1900. The 117 losses recorded by the team stood as a Major League Baseball record until the expansion New York Mets surpassed it in 1962, finishing with 120 losses but a slightly better winning percentage of .250.{{cite web|url=https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/40993611/chicago-white-sox-lose-100th-game-detroit-tigers-sweep|title=Chicago White Sox lose 100th game, Detroit Tigers near sweep|date=August 25, 2024|accessdate=August 25, 2024|work=ESPN.com|quote=In MLB history, only the 1916 Philadelphia A's, who were 29-100-1, reached 100 losses in fewer games than the White Sox.}}{{cite web|url=https://www.cbssports.com/mlb/news/white-sox-lose-100th-game-of-2024-mlb-season-chicago-club-on-pace-to-beat-1962-mets-for-most-losses/|title=White Sox lose 100th game of 2024 MLB season: Chicago club on pace to beat 1962 Mets for most losses|date=August 25, 2024|accessdate=August 25, 2024|first=Mike|last=Axisa|work=CBSSports.com}}{{cite news|title=Mets Lose 118th for Modern Mark|first=Louis|last=Effrat|authorlink=Louis Effrat|newspaper=The New York Times|date=September 27, 1962|page=60}}
