The 1929 MAFA season was the 34th season of the Metropolitan Amateur Football Association (MAFA), an Australian rules football competition played in the state of Victoria. The season began on 27 April and concluded on 21 September, with 30 teams participating across three divisions under a promotion and relegation system.{{cite web |title=First Round of Matches |url=https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/244451042 |publisher=The Herald |access-date=19 December 2024 |page=17 |date=26 April 1929}}

Background

The MAFA changed the structure of the final series, with the first-placed team (minor premiers) playing the fourth-placed team in the semi-finals, while the second-placed team played their third-placed team. Prior to this, first played third and second played fourth.{{cite web |title=Deciding Semi-final Positions |url=https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/2149219 |publisher=The Argus |access-date=13 December 2024 |page=5 |date=31 July 1925}}{{cite web |title=Fours Decided |url=https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/184859221 |publisher=Sporting Globe |access-date=15 December 2024 |page=9 |date=24 August 1927}} This change occurred several years before the Victorian Football League (VFL, now AFL) used the same system for finishing positions.{{cite web |last1=De Lacy |first1=Alex |title=Uni. Blues look winners in Amateur preliminary final |url=https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/178191104 |publisher=Sporting Globe |access-date=19 December 2024 |page=3 |date=9 September 1953}} As a modified version of the Argus finals system, the minor premiers still had the right to challenge the winner of the finals series for the premiership, but only if its home-and-away win–loss record was strictly better than that of the team it was challenging.

Association membership

Five new clubs − Bentleigh District, East Malvern, Melbourne High School Old Boys (MHSOB), Old Ivanhoe and Old Paradians − entered the MAFA in C Section.{{cite web |title=HISTORY |url=https://www.oldparadiansafc.com/clubhistory |publisher=Old Paradians Football Club |access-date=19 December 2024 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20240808200236/https://www.oldparadiansafc.com/clubhistory |archive-date=8 August 2024}} Flinders Naval Base left the MAFA to re-enter the Peninsula Football League (PFL), while Oakleigh and Pascoe Vale had been expelled during the 1928 season.{{cite web |title=PASCOEVALE CLUB EXPELLED |url=https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/3928954 |publisher=The Argus |access-date=16 December 2024 |page=12 |date=24 July 1928}}{{cite web |title=Peninsula Football |url=https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/74997352 |publisher=Frankston and Somerville Standard |access-date=19 December 2024 |page=5 |date=1 March 1929}}

The MAFA sought to stop the admission of further "B" teams for the 1929 season, and Teachers' College withrew "Teachers' College B" as a result. Sandringham B had already withdrawn from the MAFA late in the 1928 season.{{cite web |title=Old Melburnians Penalised |url=https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/205483473 |publisher=The Age |access-date=16 December 2024 |page=14 |date=7 August 1928}} However, Glen Huntly was permitted to keep its "Glen Huntly B" team.{{cite web |title=No More B Teams to be Admitted |url=https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/204128479 |publisher=The Age |access-date=16 December 2024 |page=6 |date=4 September 1928}}
