The 1947 Assam earthquake occurred on 29 July at 13:43 UTC with an {{M|w|link=y}} of 7.3 and a maximum EMS-98 intensity of V (Strong).
Earthquake
The earthquake was located near the border between India and Tibet. Some sources put the epicenter in India, and some put it in Tibet.{{citation|title=Significant Earthquake Database|url=https://www.ngdc.noaa.gov/nndc/struts/form?t=101650&s=1&d=1|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20060929000601/http://www.ngdc.noaa.gov/nndc/struts/form?t=101650&s=1&d=1|url-status=dead|archive-date=September 29, 2006|author=National Geophysical Data Center / World Data Service (NGDC/WDS)|publisher=National Geophysical Data Center, NOAA|doi=10.7289/V5TD9V7K|year=1972|type=Data Set}}{{cite web|url=http://aasc.nic.in/course%20material/Disaster/documentation%20on%20past%20disasters.pdf|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20170117213454/http://aasc.nic.in/course%20material/Disaster/documentation%20on%20past%20disasters.pdf|url-status=dead|archive-date=2017-01-17|title=Documentation on past disasters, their impact, measures taken, vulnerable areas in Assam|author=AASC|publisher=Assam Administrative Staff College|page=9}} The released seismic moment was about 1.5×1020 Nm.{{citation|title=Instantaneous deformation and kinematics of the India-Australia Plate|journal=Geophysical Journal International|volume=168|issue=2|pages=818|year=2007|last1=Delescluse|first1=M.|last2=Chamot-Rooke|first2=N.|bibcode=2007GeoJI.168..818D|doi=10.1111/j.1365-246X.2006.03181.x|doi-access=free}} The mechanism of the earthquake is not well known.{{cite journal|title=Fractal analysis of major faults in India on a regional scale|url=http://www.geosocindia.org/abstracts/2011/sept/sep2k11/j-d-09-00084.pdf|first1=P.|last1=Sengupta|first2=S. Damage
Other seismicity
The border region was struck by the much larger 8.6 {{M|w}} Assam–Tibet earthquake three years later, on August 15, 1950.
