1956–57 Real Madrid CF season

The Spanish Federation lifted the ban on foreign player transfers{{cite web|url=https://as.com/futbol/2020/05/26/reportajes/1590459438_017479.html|publisher=as.com|title=A League of Foreigners|language=Spanish|author=Ignacio Camacho|access-date=1 July 2020}} allowing chairman Santiago Bernabéu to buy French playmaker Raymond Kopa from Stade de Reims{{cite web|url=http://www.liberation.fr/sports/2017/03/03/des-mines-du-nord-au-real-six-histoires-de-raymond-kopa_1552979|title=Des mines du Nord au Real, six histoires de Raymond Kopa|work=Libération|date=3 March 2017|author=Tom Rossi|language=French}} to boost the midfield as a winger,{{cite web|title=1958 – Raymond Kopa – Le premier Français couronné|url=http://www.francefootball.fr/FF/ballon_or/bo_1958.html|publisher=France Football|date=16 December 1958|access-date=12 December 2019|author=Gabriel Hanot|language=French}} in fact the trade was released days before the 1956 European Cup Final against the same French squad. Due to the rule of limited foreigners Kopa could not feature until October, when Di Stefano became a Spanish citizen. The team finished the League campaign 5 points above Sevilla and FC Barcelona, clinching its fifth League title ever. Also, Alfredo Di Stéfano won the top scorer trophy with 31 goals.

Initially, due to the rule of not being a current league champion, the club would not compete in the continental tournament. However, chairman Santiago Bernabéu, also an organizer of the competition, allowed their entry as holders; the squad won its second consecutive European Cup in a close final against Italian team Fiorentina.{{cite web |title=Home comforts bring second title for Madrid |url=https://www.uefa.com/uefachampionsleague/news/0219-0e8c03643ccd-88d328cc73b3-1000/ |publisher=UEFA |accessdate=8 April 2020}} In May, the club reached the quarter-finals of the Copa del Generalísimo where they were defeated 6–1 (8–3 on aggregate) by Barcelona.
