In 1959, the Marché du Film (lit. Film Market) was established as the business counterpart of the Cannes Film Festival, with the aim of helping meet the needs of film industry professionals. Before this year the market was held unofficially in the cinemas of the rue d'Antibes in Cannes. Another important development of that year for the Festival, was that the French cinema moved away from the Ministry of Industry and became part of Ministry of Cultural Affairs.{{cite news|url=http://fresques.ina.fr/festival-de-cannes-en/parcours/0002/1952-1959-celebrities-politics-and-the-film-world.html |title=1952-1959: Celebrities, politics and the film world / "The 400 Blows" |work=fresques.ina.fr |access-date=6 July 2017}}
The festival opened with The 400 Blows by François Truffaut, and closed with The Diary of Anne Frank by George Stevens.{{cite news |title=Opening of the 1959 festival |url=http://fresques.ina.fr/festival-de-cannes-en/fiche-media/Cannes00054/opening-of-the-1959-festival.html |access-date=25 May 2017 |work=fresques.ina.fr}}{{cite news |title=Shock: Cannes 1959 |url=http://www.ina.fr/video/VDD10007925/le-choc-cannes-1959-video.html |access-date=25 May 2017 |work=ina.fr}}
