The 1962 Intercontinental Cup was a football tie held over two legs between Brazilian club Santos, winners of the 1962 Copa Libertadores, and Portuguese club Benfica, winners of the 1961–62 European Cup. Santos won the Intercontinental Cup for the first time.{{cite web |url=https://www.rsssf.org/tablesi/intconclub62.html |title=Intercontinental Club Cup 1962 |last1=Gorgazzi |first1=Osvaldo José |date=14 April 1999 |publisher=RSSS |access-date=1 February 2015}}
The tie is remembered as pitching Brazilian player Pelé against Portuguese player Eusébio, two of the leading players of the 1960s, who played against each other on only three occasions.{{cite web |title=REMEMBERING THREE RARE BUT MOMENTOUS OCCASIONS WHEN PELÉ AND EUSÉBIO SQUARED OFF |url=https://thesefootballtimes.co/2018/08/21/remembering-the-three-rare-but-momentous-occasions-when-pele-and-eusebio-squared-off/ |publisher=These Football Times |access-date=4 June 2019}} It is considered that the second leg, Santos' 2–5 win in Lisbon, in which Pelé scored a hat-trick, was the greatest performance ever seen in the competition.{{cite web |title=The best single game performances by the 6 greatest football/soccer players of all time |url=http://otaviopinto.com/index.php/2016/06/25/6greatest/}}{{cite web |title=Extraordinary Pele crowns Santos in Lisbon |url=https://www.fifa.com/news/extraordinary-pele-crowns-santos-lisbon-1782903 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20190604172048/https://www.fifa.com/news/extraordinary-pele-crowns-santos-lisbon-1782903 |url-status=dead |archive-date=June 4, 2019 |publisher=fifa |access-date=4 June 2019}}{{cite news|last1=Vickery|first1=Tim|title=Will South Africa 2010 produce a new Pele?|url=https://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/timvickery/2009/11/pele.html|access-date=5 May 2011|publisher=BBC Sport|date=23 December 2009}}
