Changes for 1972

There were several changes from the previous year's British PGA circuit schedule, with the inclusion of the Madrid Open, the Dutch Open and the Lancia d'Oro tournament; they joined the five national opens in continental Europe that were included in 1971.{{cite news |title=Extra £32,000 at stake for Britons |newspaper=The Times |date=7 December 1971 |page=10 |via=The Times Digital Archive |url=https://link.gale.com/apps/doc/CS169178503/TTDA?u=bli_ttda&sid=TTDA&xid=0b17eed5 |access-date=24 February 2020 |url-access=limited}} Also added were the John Player Trophy and the Sunbeam Electric Scottish Open, as well as the returning John Player Classic and Sumrie Better-Ball tournaments;{{cite news |last=Dunn |first=Alan |url=https://www.newspapers.com/image/259729577/ |title=New season enlivened |newspaper=The Guardian |location=London, United Kingdom |date=23 February 1972 |page=22 |via=Newspapers.com |access-date=15 June 2020 |url-access=subscription}} lost from the calendar were the Agfa-Gevaert Tournament, the Classic International, the Daks Tournament and the Gallaher Ulster Open.

According to the United Press International, the circuit exceeded $1,000,000 in total prize money for the first time.{{Cite news |title=British Linksmen Now Able To Pass Up U.S. Pro Tour |date=23 December 1971 |page=7A |newspaper=Playground Daily News |location=Fort Walton Beach, Florida |url=https://www.newspapers.com/image/54270258/?match=1&terms=%22Peter%20Oosterhuis%22 |access-date=2024-12-03 |via=Newspapers.com}}
