The 20th Metro Manila Film Festival was held in December 1994. This film festival is notable because no film won the award for Best Picture, the Gatpuno Antonio J. Villegas Cultural Awards, Best Director, and Best Screenplay. When asked on the absence of these awards, Board of Jurors chairman Alejandro Roces stated that none of the entries during that year were deserving of the awards.{{cite web|url=http://video48.blogspot.com/2010/10/1994-metro-manila-film-festival-no-best.html|title=THE 1994 METRO MANILA FILM FESTIVAL: NO BEST PICTURE; ROI VINZON, BEST ACTOR|publisher=Video 48}}{{cite web|url=http://www.abs-cbnnews.com/entertainment/12/28/10/2010-mmff-no-different-past-mmffs|title=A look at the past MMFF controversies|publisher=ABS-CBN News}} Furthermore, this film festival is different from the Manila Film Festival (MFF) that took place earlier that year, which was marked by a scandal over the recipient of the Best Actor and Best Actress award.{{cite web|url=https://www.imdb.com/event/ev0000431/1994 |title=Metro Manila Film Festival: Awards for 1994 |publisher=Internet Movie Database }}Lo, Ricky.
