Season summary

Portsmouth's centenary season, 1998–99, saw a serious financial crisis hit the club and in December 1998, chairman Martin Gregory quit his post after being targeted of abuse from Portsmouth fans which gave him no choice but to sell his 97% ownership of the club{{cite web|title=Football: Pompey chief is forced out.|url=http://www.thefreelibrary.com/Football%3a+Pompey+chief+is+forced+out.-a060624417|work=The Free Library|publisher=The Mirror|date=19 December 1998|accessdate=17 March 2012}} and in February 1999, Portsmouth went into receivership.{{cite web|title=Football: Portsmouth Saved By Bank.|url=http://www.thefreelibrary.com/Football%3a+Portsmouth+Saved+By+Bank.-a060394252|work=The Free Library|publisher=The Mirror|date=2 February 1999|accessdate=17 March 2012}} They avoided relegation again that season, and were then saved from closure by new chairman Milan Mandarić, who saved the club with a takeover deal in May 1999. The new chairman immediately started investing.{{cite web|last=Reynolds|first=Lee|title=FOOTBALL: MILAN'S ON THE BALL.|url=http://www.thefreelibrary.com/FOOTBALL%3a+MILAN'S+ON+THE+BALL.-a060385967|work=The Free Library|publisher=The Mirror|date=18 May 1999|accessdate=17 March 2012}}
