The ranking in this table is consistent with International Olympic Committee convention in its published medal tables. By default, the table is ordered by the number of gold medals the athletes from a nation have won (in this context, a nation is an entity represented by a National Olympic Committee). The number of silver medals is taken into consideration next, and then the number of bronze medals. If nations are still tied, equal ranking is given; they are listed alphabetically by IOC country code.{{cite web | url=http://www.ocasia.org/Game/MWinner.aspx?AMWCode=17&GCode=1 | title=Over all medal standings – Bangkok 1998 | publisher=ocasia.org | work=Olympic Council of Asia | access-date=April 23, 2011 | archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20100616235841/http://ocasia.org/Game/MWinner.aspx?AMWCode=17&GCode=1 | archive-date=June 16, 2010 | url-status=dead| df=mdy-all }}{{cite news |last=Johnson|first=Ian|url=https://www.wsj.com/articles/SB121856271893833843?mod=psp_free_today&mg=com-wsj#printMode|title=Who's on First in Medals Race|newspaper=The Wall Street Journal|date=August 13, 2008|access-date=June 5, 2011| archive-url= https://web.archive.org/web/20110604204831/http://online.wsj.com/article/SB121856271893833843.html?mod=psp_free_today&mg=com-wsj| archive-date= 4 June 2011 | url-status= live}}
