S. Rajasekhara Reddy was invited to form the Government by Governor Surjit Singh Barnala. Expectedly, the Government lasted the full term of 5 years and the tenure of the Legislative Assembly was due to expire on 30 May 2009. The Election Commission of India (ECI) decided to hold the Assembly elections along with the general election. Background
On the recommendation of the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, Governor Surjit Singh Barnala dissolved the 11th Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly on November 14, 2003.{{Cite web |title=AP governor okays assembly dissolution|url=https://www.rediff.com/news/2003/nov/14ap3.htm|date=14 November 2003}} The tenure of the 11th Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly was originally set to end on November 9, 2004. However, Chief Minister N.
