United after a trade from the Dallas Burn. The trade was initiated by the league after Adu had signed in November 2003 with the intent of playing for D.C., his local team.{{cite news |last=Bell |first=Jack |date=November 18, 2003 |title=14-Year-Old Signs Contract With Major League Soccer |url=https://www.nytimes.com/2003/11/18/sports/soccer/14yearold-signs-contract-with-major-league-soccer.html |work=The New York Times |accessdate=January 16, 2024}}{{cite news |last=DeSimone |first=Bonnie |date=May 30, 2004 |title=When you're Freddy Adu, everything is larger than life |url=https://www.chicagotribune.com/news/ct-xpm-2004-05-30-0405300335-story.html |work=Chicago Tribune |accessdate=January 16, 2024}}
