The 2005 U.S. Women's Open was the 60th U.S. Women's Open, held June 23–26 at Cherry Hills Country Club in Cherry Hills Village, Colorado, a suburb south of Denver. The par-71 course was set at {{convert|6749|yd}}, at an average elevation over {{convert|5300|ft|-1}} above sea level. The event was televised by ESPN and NBC Sports.

Birdie Kim holed out from a greenside bunker on the 72nd hole to win her only major (and only LPGA) title, two strokes ahead of runners-up Brittany Lang and Morgan Pressel, both teenage amateurs from the United States.{{cite news|url=https://www.si.com/vault/2005/07/04/8265401/watch-the-birdie|magazine=Sports Illustrated |last=Shipnuck |first=Alan |title=Watch the Birdie |date=July 4, 2005|access-date=June 28, 2013}} In the final pairing as a 54-hole co-leader, Pressel needed to hole her chip shot to tie, but it went {{convert|20|ft|0}} past and she bogeyed. Lang had earlier missed a par putt from {{convert|8|ft}}. Lorena Ochoa made four birdies on the back nine and led with one hole remaining, but made a quadruple-bogey on the 72nd hole to finish four strokes behind.{{cite news|url=https://news.google.com/newspapers?id=n-dRAAAAIBAJ&sjid=2XADAAAAIBAJ&pg=3475%2C4185313 |newspaper=Pittsburgh Post-Gazette|agency=Associated Press |last=Ferguson |first=Doug |title=A birdie for Birdie clinches Open title |date=June 27, 2005 |page=D-1 }}{{cite news|url=https://news.google.com/newspapers?id=tkoqAAAAIBAJ&sjid=F0UEAAAAIBAJ&pg=1851%2C6268384 |newspaper=Milwaukee Journal Sentinel |last=Bonk |first=Thomas |agency=(Los Angeles Times) |title=Birdie lives up to her name |date=June 27, 2005 |page=1C}}

Pressel, 17, held a share of the 54-hole lead, with Karen Stupples and amateur Michelle Wie, age 15; Kim was one stroke back in a three-way tie for fourth, with 18-year-old Paula Creamer and Young Jo.{{cite news|url=https://news.google.com/newspapers?id=NtVYAAAAIBAJ&sjid=s_ADAAAAIBAJ&pg=1779%2C6450094 |newspaper=Eugene Register-Guard |location=Oregon|agency=Associated Press |last=Ferguson |first=Doug |title=Teenagers in the spotlight on eve of U.S. Open's last act |date=June 26, 2005|page=D1}}{{cite news|url=https://news.google.com/newspapers?id=NtVYAAAAIBAJ&sjid=s_ADAAAAIBAJ&pg=4918%2C6477225 |newspaper=Eugene Register-Guard |location=Oregon|title=U.S. Women's Open: Third Round |date=June 26, 2005|page=D8}}
