Background
The course, Infineon Raceway (now called Sonoma Raceway), is one of two road courses to hold NASCAR races, the other is Watkins Glen International.{{cite web|url=http://msn.foxsports.com/nascar/story/road-course-races-measure-competitive-ability-061710|title=Road course races challenge the specialsts|last=White|first=Rea|date=18 June 2010|publisher=Fox Sports|accessdate=June 18, 2012}} The standard road course at Infineon Raceway is a twelve-turn course that is {{convert|2.52|mi|km}} long;{{cite web|title=Sears Point|url=http://www.gt-racing.co.uk/circuits/northamerica/searspoint.html|publisher=gt-racing.co.uk|accessdate=June 18, 2012}} the track was modified in 1998, adding the Chute, which bypassed turns five and six, shortening the course to {{convert|1.95|mi|km}}.
