The 2008 Santa Catarina floods were floods in Santa Catarina, Brazil in November 2008. They occurred after a period of heavy rainfall, most significantly from 20-23 of November. The state had suffered constant rainfalls for over two months on the coast, which turned the soil wet enough to cause a landslide during the storm that hit the state in late November.{{cite web|title=Death toll from Brazil floods, mudslides rises to 45 following weekend rains |publisher=Associated Press |date=2008-11-24 |url=http://www.newsday.com/news/nationworld/wire/sns-ap-lt-brazil-flooding,0,4113179.story |access-date=2008-11-24 |url-status=dead |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20090206211751/http://www.newsday.com/news/nationworld/wire/sns-ap-lt-brazil-flooding%2C0%2C4113179.story |archive-date=February 6, 2009 }} It affected around 60 towns and over 1.5 million people in the state of Santa Catarina in Brazil.{{cite web |title=Brazil floods kill at least 45, uproot thousands |work=ABC News |date=2008-11-24 |url=http://www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2008/11/25/2428589.htm?section=justin |access-date=2008-11-24| archive-url= https://web.archive.org/web/20081203034725/http://www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2008/11/25/2428589.htm?section=justin| archive-date= 3 December 2008 | url-status= dead}} At least 128 people are confirmed to have been killed {{cite web |title=Mais um corpo é localizado em Santa Catarina; número de mortes chega a 128 |publisher=Folha Online |date=2008-11-24 |url=http://www1.folha.uol.com.br/folha/cotidiano/ult95u479255.shtml |language=Portuguese |access-date=2008-12-14}} with over 78,700 being forced to evacuate their homes.{{Cite web |title=G1 > Brasil - NOTÍCIAS - Sobe para 79 o número de mortos pela chuva em Santa Catarina |url=http://g1.globo.com/Noticias/Brasil/0,,MUL875405-5598,00.html |access-date=2022-11-21 |website=g1.globo.com}}{{cite web |title=Mais de 50 mil estão desabrigados e desalojados em SC; mortos chegam a 65 |publisher=Folha Online |date=2008-11-25 |url=http://www1.folha.uol.com.br/folha/cotidiano/ult95u471308.shtml |language=Portuguese |access-date=2008-11-25}}{{Cite web |date=2008-11-29 |title=The death toll in SC rises to 109; 19 are still missing |url=https://www1.folha.uol.com.br/folha/cotidiano/ult95u473172.shtml |access-date=2022-11-21 |website=www1.folha.uol.com.br}} A further 150,000 have been left without electricity, while water rationing is being carried out in at least one town due to purification problems. Santa Catarina state Governor Luiz Henrique da Silveira had earlier suggested that the final death toll was likely to be over 50, a figure that has proved optimistic.
