The San Jose municipal elections of 2010 were held on Sunday December 5 to elect the mayor, deputy mayors, syndics and district councilors{{cite news|last1=Tribunal Supremo de Elecciones|title=Declaratoria de Síndicos y Concejales de Distrito|url=http://www.tse.go.cr/juris/electorales/0244-E11-2011.pdf}} of the central canton of San José, capital of Costa Rica. Due to legal reform unifying the municipal elections with those of aldermen, the Supreme Electoral Tribunal decreed that for a single time the authorities elected in these elections would hold office for six years, so the next elections would be in 2016.

The mayor in office Johnny Araya Monge of the National Liberation Party was the winner with more than 60% of the votes. Deputy Gloria Valerín Rodríguez, then member of the Citizens' Action Party (at the time the main opposition), was also a candidate.{{cite news|last1=Fuster|first1=Mariella|title=Exdiputada Gloria Valerín aspira a Alcaldía de San José|url=http://www.nacion.com/nacional/politica/Exdiputada-Gloria-Valerin-Alcaldia-Jose_0_1134486589.html|accessdate=3 February 2016|agency=La Nación|date=14 July 2010}} Deputy and former presidential candidate Óscar López Arias of the Accessibility Without Exclusion Party,{{cite news|last1=Nuñez|first1=Maria Jose|title=Oscar López, candidato a alcalde: Presupuesto se ha dedicado a "maquillar" San José|url=http://semanariouniversidad.ucr.cr/pais/oscar-lpez-candidato-a-alcalde-presupuesto-se-ha-dedicado-a-maquillar-san-jos/|archive-url=https://archive.today/20160203121333/http://semanariouniversidad.ucr.cr/pais/oscar-lpez-candidato-a-alcalde-presupuesto-se-ha-dedicado-a-maquillar-san-jos/|url-status=dead|archive-date=February 3, 2016|accessdate=3 February 2016|agency=Semanario Universidad|date=21 July 2010}} as well as Mario Alfaro of the Libertarian Movement and Luis Polinaris of the National Integration Party were candidates.{{cite news|title=Candidatos a Alcaldía de San José debatirán esta noche en la UCR|url=http://www.ucr.ac.cr/noticias/2010/11/24/candidatos-a-alcaldia-de-san-jose-debatiran-esta-noche-en-la-ucr.html|publisher=UCR}}{{cite news|title=¿Qué dijeron los candidatos y candidata a la Alcaldía de San José?|url=http://www.anep.cr/article/que-dijeron-los-candidatos-y-candidata-a-la-alcald/|publisher=ANEP|access-date=2019-03-22|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20160204021611/http://www.anep.cr/article/que-dijeron-los-candidatos-y-candidata-a-la-alcald/|archive-date=2016-02-04|url-status=dead}}
